Abstract

A process for gasifying fuel, e.g. pulverized coal, coke, lignite, or peat, comprises bringing the fuel into close contact with liquid slag in a rotating bowl-shaped container 1, Fig. 1, which is divided into two chambers 18 and 19 by a partition 17 so that the slag passes under each chamber in turn. Steam for gasification is supplied to the slag and fuel in one chamber, and air to the other, to burn the remainder of the fuel and provide heat for the process. The gaseous products are withdrawn separately at 20, 21 down the two chambers. The excess slag that is not kept up by the rotation of the container is removed at the slag outlet 37. The gaps between the moving parts are adjustable and may be kept clear of slag by steam jets. The steam and air may be supplied through the partition 17. Variations of the apparatus <PICT:0964819/C4-C5/1> are described in which the excess slag is removed at the rim of the container by the rapid rotation of the container or by the splashing caused by the injection of the reactants.
