A cut-off drum for severing lengths from a continuously moving rod, comprises a rotatable knife and a ledger to support the rod, the ledger comprising two rotatable disc elements each having a peripheral groove such that the elements are situated adjacent to each other so that the grooves where they are closest to each other form a passageway through which the rod passes to be supported. Each ledger element has at least one radial slot extending through its groove, these elements being driven at a peripheral speed equal to the speed of the movement of the rod and in such a phase relationship with the knife that a slot in one ledger element comes into line with a slot in the other ledger element in the region where the grooves form the rod-supporting passage-way, to produce an aperture through which the ledger elements receive the knife as it is severing the rod. The device is illustrated in Fig. 1. The rod CR is continuously supported between two disc ledger elements 11 and 12, each having peripheral grooves and radially extending slots 11B and 12B. The knife 19 is shaped as an arc of a helix and is mounted on the rotatable drum 20 such that the knife, in use, rotates about the axis of a helix. The rotational axis of the drum 20 is inclined to the rod CR at the helix angle of the knife 19 so that as the knife is passing through the rod, the part of the knife which is cutting the rod is at right angles to the rod. The device includes a frustro-conical grinding wheel 30 in order that the knife may be re-ground after each cut.
