1,274,545. Optically brightening cellulosic materials. FARBWERKE HOECHST A.G. 16 July, 1969 [22 July, 1968], No. 35888/69. Heading D1P. [Also in Division C2] . Fibrous materials, e.g. paper or cotton, are optically brightened by treatment with a 4, 4'- bis-(s-triazinylamino)-stilbene-2, 2'-disulphonic acid derivative of the general formula: wherein A and A' are each a bivalent C 2-8 hydrocarbon radical which may be substituted by non-chromophoric radicals, R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP> are each a hydrogen atom or a C 1-5 alkyl group, R<SP>3</SP>, R<SP>4</SP>, R<SP>5</SP> and R<SP>6</SP> are each a C 1-5 alkyl, cycloalkyl, aralkyl or aryl group, or R<SP>3</SP> and R<SP>4</SP> and/or R<SP>5</SP> and R<SP>6</SP>, together with the nitrogen atom to which they are attached, form a saturated heterocyclic ring, R<SP>7</SP> and R<SP>8</SP> are each a hydrogen atom or a C 1-5 alkyl or benzyl group and X- is a colourless anion. The brighteners may be added, in liquid form or dissolved in water, to paper pulp, optionally before the addition of auxiliary agents such as rosin size or aluminium sulphate and the pulp is thoroughly mixed before forming sheets; or alternatively they may be used in coating mixtures for paper. They may be used together with cationic softening agents for fabrics and knitted fabrics of cellulose fibres and fibres of regenerated cellulose; or they may be used together with auxiliary agents for the crease-proofing of cellulose fibres.
