Abstract
1,238,157. 3-Carboxy-2,1-benzoxathian-1,1- dioxides. ARZNEIMITTELWERK DRESDEN VEB. 18 March, 1970, No. 13067/70. Heading C2C. Novel compounds of the formula wherein R 1 and R 2 denote the same or different C 1-5 alkyl radicals, and R 3 is H or a C 1-5 alkyl radical, may be obtained (a) by treating a compound of the formula wherein R 4 is a carboxyl, carbalkoxy, carbamoyl or carbonitrile group and Hal is a halogen atom, with sulphuric acid, then diluting the solution with water and heating; or (b) by saponifying a compound of the formula wherein R 5 is a carbamoyl or carbalkoxy group, by heating in concentrated or dilute mineral acids. The products show anti-convulsive properties against cramps induced by strychnine and cardiazole in animals. Intermediate of Formula (3) may be obtained by treatment of compounds of the formula wherein R 6 is a carbonitrile, carbamoyl or carbalkoxy group, with concentrated sulphuric acid.
