Abstract

A shortenable umbrella frame comprises a stick, ribs pivotally connected to a crown, main struts pivotally connected to the ribs and to a first slider, and auxiliary struts pivotally connected to the main struts and to a second slider which has projections which are spaced angularly and extend radially outwards with respect to the stick axis and to which the inner ends of the auxiliary struts are pivoted, so that when the frame is closed either the ribs or main struts nestle relatively to the projections from the second slider or relatively to recesses between the projections. In a first embodiment, Figs. 2-10 (not shown) and Fig. 1, a main slider 7 and an auxiliary slider 8 slide on a two-part telescopic stick 1 of hexagonal section and having a crown 9 to which are pivoted ribs 11 having inner parts a with a U-shaped section within which outer parts b slide, parts b being secured to sleeves 17 sliding over parts a. The flattened inner end of each auxiliary strut 13 is pivoted on a pin 22 between projecting wings (20), Fig. 3, of slider 8, pins 22, wings (20), and the body of slider 8 being integrally moulded in a plastics material. When the umbrella is collapsed inner and outer parts of the struts 13 and the wings (20) are received within recesses in struts 12 which have a U-shaped section, struts 13 being bowed with their central parts abutting the stick 1, and outer parts of struts 12 being received in recesses in the members 17 to which they are pivoted, members 17 having a U-shaped section over at least part of their length. On releasing the umbrella from the collapsed state the energy stored by the bowing of struts 13 automatically partially opens the umbrella, Fig. 10. In a second embodiment, Figs. 11-13 (not shown) recesses 51, 52 are formed in flanges 48, 50 respectively in auxiliary and main sliders 41, 46 respectively to receive parts of telescopic ribs 36, 37 when the umbrella is collapsed, the recesses 51 being aligned axially, with respect to the stick axis, with recesses 52.
