1,235,800. Producing metal articles etc.; casting metals. EUROPEAN ATOMIC ENERGY COMMUNITY. 12 Dec., 1969 [16 Dec., 1968], No. 60801/69. Headings B3A and B3F. [Also in Division F4] A metallic sample 21 for analysis (e.g. by an ion analyser after metallographic polishing) while embedded in an alloy, is received on a removable cover 16 or plug of a hollow support 15, in which the alloy is to be cast while the support 15 is secured at the lower end of a bore 3 in a body 1 with a heater 4 for melting and degassing in a vacuum the alloy (Sn-Bi eutectic) 11 on a piston 8 in a parallel bore 2. The piston is raised so that the molten alloy passes through a duct 5 into the bore 3 and thence into the support 15 through an orifice 14 in a cover 13 or plug. A valve to a vacuum pump communicating by a connection 6 is then closed and a valved communication to the connection 6 is opened to admit gas under pressure so that the alloy cools under a pressure, e.g. of 7 atmospheres. The support 15 containing the sample 21 embedded in the alloy is then removed. Before casting, the sample 21 is held on the flat face of the removable support cover 16 by a spring 22. Vacuum seals 7 and 17-20 between the various parts and covers may be protected by a temperature-regulating system.
