Abstract

1,235,309. Reciprocating compressors. HENRY & CIE, JEAN KAUER & CIE SUCCS. Oct. 15, 1968, No. 48829/68. Heading F1N. In a compressor having a piston 9 reciprocating in a cylinder 10 and provided with a diaphragm seal 20 which constitutes the movable wall of a chamber 21 for collecting gas escaping between the piston and cylinder, the chamber 21 is connected by a tube 29 to a second chamber 27 having a diaphragm wall 25 fixed to, or abutting, a piston rod extension 23. Thus the forces applied to the piston 9 due to the pressure acting on the diaphragm 20 and on the diaphragm 25 are substantially balanced. The chamber 27 may be provided solely for balancing the pressure forces, but in the embodiment shown the chamber 27 acts as a pre-compression chamber for gas subsequently admitted to the cylinder 10. Gas from the tube 29 and a valved supply pipe 31 enters the chamber 27 through a non-return valve 32 during the compression stroke of the piston 9. During the suction stroke, the gas in the chamber 27 is forced through a passage (not shown) into an inlet 13 to the cylinder 10. The piston is reciprocated by an eccentric pin operating through a slide mechanism 6, 7.
