A device 10 for a lorry or other vehicle, comprises a substantially closed hollow member 11 of thermoplastic plastics material having a first wall portion 13 defining a mounting for attachment to the rear of the vehicle and a second wall portion 12 disposed substantially at right angles thereto so that in use it projects below a platform of the vehicle at least partly to cover the rear of the space below the platform and between the lateral boundaries of the vehicle, thereby forming a barrier to prevent following traffic running under the rear of the vehicle. Viewed laterally in use, the cross-section of the member may be triangular, or an inverted L with hollow limbs as shown. Strengthening ribs orthogonal to the first and second wall portions may be provided externally, 19, or internally of the member, e.g. at its lateral ends, and adjacent ribs may be joined by a further orthogonal wall portion (23), Figs. 3 and 5 (not shown). Parts 13a, 13b, Fig. 4, of opposite wall portion 3 may be pressed and welded together to give reinforcement zones, e.g. for holes 15. Reinforcing inserts 25, e.g. of steel or elastic textile material, in band or wire form are recessed in the wall 11 and have surface irregularities 27 in the end regions 26 for positive connection with the thermoplastic material, the position of the inserts being indicated by external marks. The member may also be reinforced by mineral fibre and filled with foamed plastics material. Holes 16, 17 are provided for access e.g. to rear lights and trailer couplings. The device may be mounted on the vehicle by interposition of springs acting longitudinally of the vehicle.
