Abstract

1,098,424. Railway vehicle suspension. BRITISH RAILWAYS BOARD. Aug. 10, 1966 [Aug. 17, 1965], No. 35209/65. Heading B7L. [Also in Division P2] A railway vehicle suspension means comprises a substantially cylindrical liquidfilled rubber bag 1, Fig. 1, extending longitudinally of the vehicle and having an oval cross-section transversely of the vehicle, the bag being sandwiched between an upper plate-like member 2 secured to or forming part of the vehicle frame 4 and a lower plate-like member 3 secured to or forming part of the top of an axle box 5, the bag-engaging surfaces of the members 2 and 3 being curved concavely towards the bag. Upper and lower longitudinal ribs 6 moulded to the bag 1 engage in longitudinal grooves 7 in the members 2 and 3 to positively locate the bag between the members. Alternatively, the bag may be bonded to the concave surfaces of the members 2 and 3. The transverse curvature of each member 2 and 3 is circular, but if a non-linear characteristic is required, the curvature is non-circular. The suspension permits transverse displacement between the frame 4 and the axle box 5 and controlled small movements in yaw but is stiff in the longitudinal direction. The bag performs a rolling movement during transverse displacement.
