Abstract

1,233,469. Moulding heating units. JOHNSMANVILLE CORP. 10 Dec., 1968 [16 Jan., 1968], No. 58614/68. Heading B5A. [Also in Division H5] An electrical heating unit comprises a wire or ribbon coil resistance 1 or a metal sheathed element 6, Fig. 3 (not shown), embedded within a body 2 of inorganic refractory fibre insulation formed by filter-moulding the fibre in situ from a liquid suspension about the resistance 1, 6. An inorganic binder of clays such as bentonite or hectonite, alkali metal silicates such as sodium and potassium silicates, frit, borax, aluminium phosphate, colloidal silica, colloidal alumina, &c., may be used for the fibrous body 2, which is of semi-refractory wools or mineral fibres formed of relatively pure rock or argillaceous matter, or metallurgical slags, but preferably of high refractory compositions such as silica or quartz, magnesia, and alumina-silica compositions including those containing titania and/or zirconia. A heat-transmitting, fluidimpervious cover 7, of ceramic or glass, and a further insulating inorganic refractory fibre sheet 8 are provided to protect the heating unit. The body 2 may be impregnated or treated with an indurating agent such as sodium silicate, colloidal silica or alumina, aluminium phosphate or zirconium pyrophosphate. Organic or fugitive binders are used during manufacture to contribute pre-dried strength and facilitate handling of the body 2. Also non-refractory fibrous materials such as cellulosic fibres are used to enhance filtering or improve coherence of the unfired product. The resistance 1 is positioned upon a suitable filter-moulding screen (not shown) in the desired configuration, the refractory fibre slurry including binder, fillers, filter aids, colouring pigments, &c., is applied, and pressure is used to force the liquid component through the screen, which collects the fibres, until the body 2 is built up to the desired thickness. The heating unit has applications in cooking stoves, hot-plates, commercial ovens, warmers, toasters, grills, broilers and commercial, laboratory and bobby furnaces or kilns.
