Abstract
1,232,595. Gas blast switches; vacuum switches. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. 21 Aug., 1968 [25 Aug., 1967], No. 39330/67. Heading H1N. A high voltage switch comprises a vacuum switch 15 and a resistor 14 in series with each other and in parallel with a main circuit interrupter 12, the vacuum switch 15 being normally open but being closed while the main interrupter contacts are being separated. The main interrupter and control arrangements are essentially as described in Specification 983,501. The movable contact 36 of the vacuum switch 15 is connected to a piston 43 subjected on one side to the pressure within the high pressure reservoir 20 through conduit 57 and on the other side to the pressure in the exhaust chamber 50 through a conduit 61. When the exhaust valve 49 opens in the usual way the pressure drops in space 50 and the vacuum switch closes. After the main contacts 22, 23 have separated the valve is reclosed and pressure rises in space 50, the vacuum switch being reopened by a spring 45, to interrupt the resistor current.
