Abstract

1,231,820. Rotary pumps. H. M. HOBSON Ltd. Dec.16, 1969 [Dec.18, 1968], No.60232/68. Heading F1F. A rotary fuel pump of the radially-sliding abutment kind comprising a plurality of radial vanes 1, Fig .1, slidable in slots in the housing 2 and loaded by springs 3 into sealing engagement with a ring 4 which is caused to precess by an eccentrically mounted cam 5 on a pump drive shaft 6 includes a valve 9, Fig.2, rotatable with the shaft to supply and discharge fuel to and from the pump. The valve 9 may be connected to the shaft 6 by a flexible coupling 18, as shown, or formed integral with the shaft. Ports 12 permit fuel in the pumping chambers to flow to behind the vanes to hydraulically balance them. Using a pump of the sliding abutment kind reduces abrasive wear from contaminated fuel on the pump parts. The vane tips are sited where centrifugal force is least and this force will also tend to remove the abrasive material from the rotating ring 4.
