Abstract

Apparatus for winding spiral springs comprises a base-plate 1 containing a central intake aperture 2 for a plurality of spring strips 6 to be wound into spiral springs and a barrel 3 having in its periphery a plurality of slots 5 to receive respective ones of the plurality of strips 6 and being relatively rotatable with respect to the base-plate 1 to effect a winding operation to coil the strips in the interior of the barrel 3 symmetrically with respect to the centre of the barrel. In operation the strips 6 are fed so that the length projecting through the aperture 2 is equal to the length in the spring to be coiled, after which they are clamped by means 10. The barrel 3 is lowered so that each of the strips 6 dropping radially outwards passes through its allotted guide slot 5, without being held therein. The barrel 3 is then rotated to coil the strips 6 until the outer portions are pulled inside the barrel. The inner end portions of the resultant spring are severed by either inserting a suitable cutting, punching or drilling tool through aperture 9 or by turning the completely filled barrel further in the winding direction. In other embodiments the strips 6 emerge from the aperture 2 inclined to the plane of winding defined by the top of the base-plate 1 (see Fig. 3) and may be wound either in the direction 8 in Fig. 3 to form a spring as shown in Fig. 5 or in the direction 8 in Fig. 6 to form a spring as shown in Fig. 8. In another embodiment the aperture 2 is in the form of slots pointing outwards and equal in number to the strips 6.
