Abstract

1,230,530. Making glass fibres. OWENSCORNING FIBERGLAS CORP. 13 June, 1969 [9 July, 1968], No. 30165/69. Heading C1M. Apparatus for producing glass fibres wherein molten glass is ejected horizontally as primary filaments 142 from a spinner 76 rotating about a vertical axis, and the filaments are attenuated into fibres by an annular, downwardly directed blast of heated gas passing between the spinner and a generally inwardly inclined annular control surface 158, 164, 182 for directing the gaseous blast, is characterized by having an outward step 188 between the upper and lower portions (164 and 182) which causes the gases to expand abruptly thus creating turbulence, whereby long fibres entrained in the gas are broken into shorter lengths by striking the lower section 182 of the control surface.
