Abstract

1,229,199. Two-part couplings. PAINTON & CO. Ltd. 8 Nov., 1968 [6 Oct., 1967], No. 45902/67. Heading H2E. In a multi-way socket connector for making connections to a tape cable, conductive ribbons of the tape cable backed by resilient arms of plastics material form connector contacts along a side of each socket. As shown, the connector comprises a main body 20 and an insert 22 which is retained in the body 20 by detents 23 engaging apertures 24, both members being made of insulating plastics materials, e.g. nylon or acetal resin. The insert 22 has two pairs of resilient arms 29, 30, and tape cables 5, 51 are bent into an "M" formation and positioned so that the centre sweep of the "M" locates between one of each pair of arms, the free ends of the cables both locating in the central space between arms 30. The tape cables 5, 51 have exposed conductor portions 4 which form contacts for engaging resiliently, under the influence of the arms 29, 30, rigid pin contacts 27 inserted through apertures 26 in the main body. Contact pins 27 may have angular ends to strip away the insulation on the tape cable when first inserted to obviate the need to expose portions 4 of the cable before assembly. Two such connectors are provided, being joined by an integral bridging-piece 21. In a second embodiment (Fig. 5, not shown) a single tape cable is wound round a single elongate comb-shaped member, the "teeth" of which are bifurcated, the outer surface of the cable again being exposed to form a contact portion, the bifurcated teeth providing the required contact resilience. In a third embodiment (Fig. 2, not shown) a tape cable in the form of an "M" is positioned on a member having two parallel rows of resilient arms so that there is provided an elongate channel which can receive the contact-bearing edge of a printed circuit board.
