Abstract

1,083,974. Two-part couplings. THOMAS & BETTS CO. Oct. 5, 1964 [Oct. 3, 1963], No. 40422/64. Heading H2E. A hermaphroditic connector comprises a resilient insulating housing 10 having bores (40), (Fig. 5, not shown), which communicate with a slot through one of its ends, and contacts (42) secured in the bores with their blade ends retained in the slot. The upper surface of the housing 10 has polarizing rails 30 and a shoulder 26 rising above them, for respectively engaging grooves 32 inside the slot of a mating connector and for abutting its end surface 34. The contacts (42) (Fig. 8, not shown), each having ears (66, 64) wrapped around the conductor and insulation of a lead (44), are retained in the bores by ears (56) which engage surfaces (54) on both sides of a central groove (51) in the roof of each bore (Fig. 5, not shown), and are each supported from below by a tongue (52) integral with the housing. An arcuate stop (48) at the rear of each bore engages arms (62) on each contact and the tips (46) of the blades lie in recesses 74 in the roof of the slot. When the (original) upper end portion of an identical but inverted connector is received in the slot, raised portions (70) on the two sets of blades ensure firm contact. The housing 10 is provided with springy notches 13 on its side walls and stops 18 on its upper and lower surfaces for mounting it in a panel aperture.
