1,228,612. Electromagnetic contactors. FABRIK ELEKTRISCHER APARATE SPRECHER & SCHUH A.G. 4 July, 1968 [3 Aug., 1967], No. 32008/68. Heading H1N. The electromagnet of a contactor has a shunt adjacent its biased armature arranged to divert flux from the armature during its initial attraction on energization of the contactor winding. As shown in Fig. 4 the shunt 12 is fitted over the winding 5 and is effective until the pole face 15 of the armature 2 passes the pole face 14 of the shunt 12, the distance #a between the yoke face 16 and shunt face 14 being greater than the separation of pole faces 15, 16 when contact members 1, 6 engage. At least one of the members 1, 6 is resilient. In a pot-type electromagnet, Fig. 10 (not shown), the shunt is tubular. The armature and the core and yoke member may each have two or three limbs each of which may be surrounded by a coil, provided with shunt members. In Fig. 9 the magnetic members 38, 39 are E-shaped with uneven limbs and shunt members 41, 42 arranged to provide uniform gaps #a. As shown in Fig. 12, an arrangement with two armatures has magnetic shunts on both ends of the coils and the pole faces of the shunts are all spaced at distance #a from the plane at which the armatures meet on energization. The shunts may be formed of ferromagnetic particles embedded in parts of a resin layer around the winding.
