In an electromagnetic actuator comprising a winding 21 on a bobbin 22... 24 having a tunnel 23, e.g. of brass, through its centre and surrounded by a magnetic yoke 12, 13, 18, forming part of a magnetic circuit traversed by flux set up by the winding, and a movable armature or core 35 which is drawn along the tunnel when the winding is energized, the characteristic is modified by the provision of a plurality of fixed magnetic shunts 28 ... 30 disposed outside the tunnel and alongside the armature path at spaced intervals in the direction of armature travel so that the armature passes the shunts successively during said travel. The shunts are plates having mutually different thicknesses and/or spacings, and local variations of armature pull may be avoided by grooving the end of the armature and/or so deforming the plates adjacent their bores that a substantially continuous helix is formed. For A.C. applications the magnetic circuit components are laminated. The yoke has a non- magnetic stop member 14, and one bobbin cheek 24 is insulating and carries winding terminals, whilst the other, 22, is of magnetically permeable material, insulating linings 25, 26 being provided.
