Apparatus within an aircraft fuselage or ship cabin to enable persons within the fuselage or cabin in an emergency, e.g. when the fuselage or cabin is filled with smoke, to be guided to an exit comprises a continuous strip of material 27 secured to and extending along the inner edge of a parcel rack 26 wherein the outer surface of the strip comprises a series of successive longitudinally distributed ramps 32. By sliding his fingertips back and forth across a few of the ramps a person may determine readily the line of least resistance and it is so arranged that upon following said line a person arrives at an emergency exit.
