Abstract
1,227,353. Counterbalancing loads. CESSNA AIRCRAFT CO. 27 March, 1968 [2 Feb., 1967], No. 5187/67. Heading B8B. In a combined cylinder and accumulator arrangement a load supported by a rod head 14 is partially balanced by pressurized gas in an accumulator chamber 19 within the rod 11, and is lifted by pressurized hydraulic fluid supplied to a chamber 12. A piston 20 within the chamber 19 reacts with the head 24 of the cylinder 10 such that the rod 11 extends from the cylinder with the charge of gas to the chamber 19 via a valve 22, the charge pressure being appropriate for the load to be balanced. Pressurized fluid is supplied from a pump 15 through a port 13 to the chamber 12 to extend the rod 11 further out of the cylinder 10, being restricted by either of the retainer rings 21, 33 engaging appropriate abutments. In the embodiment of Fig. 2 (not shown) the accumulator chamber is constantly supplied with regulated high pressure hydraulic fluid to completely balance the load at any extension of the rod, while the low pressure hydraulic fluid moves the load. The accumulator chamber acts as a shock absorber for any impact loading on the cylinder.
