Abstract

1,224,149. Continuous production of alpha plaster. CONZINC RIOTINTO OF AUSTRALIA Ltd. 10 March, 1969 [28 March, 1968], No. 12432/69. Heading C1A. A method of producing alpha plaster comprises forming a slurry of particulate gypsum and water and elevating the slurry in an upwardly sloping elongated autoclave while subjecting the slurry to heat and pressure. A slurry of particulate gypsum and water, preferably containing between 5 and 45 % free water, is introduced into the lower end of the autoclave which may be of variable inclination, the angle of inclination preferably being between 5 and 45 degrees, most preferably between 15 and 35 degrees; further gypsum and water is fed into the said slurry while elevating the slurry in the autoclave by mechanical means, preferably a screw conveyer, which gives stirring and progressive dewatering of the slurry as it is being elevated, the slurry being subjected to pressure and heat, preferably between 110‹ and 140‹ C., most preferably between 115‹ and 125‹ C.; at or near the upper end of the autoclave alpha plaster is discharged, said plaster being in the form of a thin slurry or a damp product suitable for drying. Apparatus suitable for carrying out the process of the invention is described.
