Abstract

1,224,035. Thermoplastic compositions. CHEMISCHE WERKE HULS A.G. 28 June, 1968 [5 July, 1967], No. 30837/68. Heading C3P. [Also in Division H1] A thermoplastic moulding material contains (a) 30 to 90% by weight of a crystalline polypropylene which may contain a copolymer fraction of ethylene or butene-1, having a reduced viscosity of 2 to 5 dl/g. and a density of 0À901 to 0À907 g./ml., (b) 69 to 1% of an isotactic polybutene-1 having a reduced viscosity of 2 to 6 dl/g., and density of 0À910 to 0À920 g./ml., (c) 0À3 to 9% of polyisobutylene, chlorosulphonated polyethylene, a saturated silicone rubber or an amorphous ethylene-propylene or ethylenebutene-1 copolymer. When component (c) is (i) polyisobutylene, the preferred molecular weight of (c) is from 100,000 to 200,000; (ii) chlorosulphonated polyethylene, the preferred molecular weight is from 20,000 to 50,000 and (c) contains 1À3 to 1À7% sulphur and 26 to 29% chlorine; (iii) silicone rubber, the preferred molecular weight is from 200,000 to 2,000,000; (iv) an amorphous ethylene-propylene or ethylene-butene-1 copolymer, the preferred molecular weight is from 70,000 to 500,000 and (c) comprises 30-70% by weight of propylene or butene-1. The material may contain antioxidants, lubricants, sulphur compounds, anionactive, cation-active or neutral antistatics, fillers, inorganic fibres or pigments. In the examples, polybutene (containing 4,4<SP>1</SP>-thiobis- 6 - tert. - butyl - 3 - methylphenol and calcium stearate as antioxidant and lubricant respectively) and polypropylene are mixed with one of the following: (a) an amorphous ethylenepropylene copolymer, optionally mixed with a salt prepared from lauryl diethanolamine and lauric acid to give a material having antistatic properties, (b) an amorphous ethylene-butene-1 copolymer, (c) polyisobutylene, (d) silicone rubber (based on a polymer derived from dimethyl dichlorosilane) and (e) chlorosulphonated polyethylene. In further examples, (a) a mixture of polybutene, crystalline propyleneethylene copolymer and amorphous ethylenepropylene copolymer is blended with carbonblack, and (b) a mixture of polybutene, polypropylene and an amorphous propylene-ethylene copolymer is mixed with short glass fibres. Plates and sheets are made from these compositions and subjected to specified physical tests.
