Abstract

1,221,905. Metal-coating process. ALLM€NNA SVENSKA ELECTRISKA A.B. Sept.19, 1969 [Sept.20, 1968], No.46195/69. Heading C7F. In a method wherein excess molten metal is applied to an object and the excess is then removed, removal is performed by passing the object through a magnetic field so that the magnetic field in the molten metal generates a magneto-hydrodynamic force which has a wiping-off effect on the molten metal. The method is applicable to continuous hot-dipping processes wherein strip 4, e.g. of Fe, passes through a bath of molten metal 2, e.g. Zn, Al, or Sn. The relative velocity of strip and magnetic field is at least 0.5 m/s and this may be achieved by rotatable D.C. magnets 6 moving contrariwise to the strip as shown, or by stationary multiphase A.C. electromagnets operating to generate a moving magnetic field. To facilitate wiping-off, the metal coating may be heated by flames, resistance heating, or by the magnetic field when high-frequency A.C. electromagnets are used.
