Abstract
1,220,376. Very high pressure apparatus; synthetic diamonds. H. ISHIZUKA. 26 April, 1968 [4 May, 1967; 16 May, 1967 (2)], No. 19914/68. Heading B1X. An apparatus for carrying out a chemical reaction, e.g. the production of synthetic diamonds, under high temperature and high pressure, comprises a reaction chamber 19 associated with a pair of opposed pistons 11, 11', which taper towards a flat end, an annular die 13 having a cylindrical inner wall defining an aperture into which the ends of the pistons protrude and, disposed in the aperture, a hollow cylindrical body a, made of material having a relatively low compressibility coefficient and having tapered end faces s, s', surrounding the reaction chamber 19, and gaskets 20, 20' placed on the end faces and sealing the gap between the taper of the pistons and the inner cylindrical wall of the die 13. The cylindrical body a may be made of alumina, magnesia, zirconia, thoria, beryllia, or titania. For the synthesis of diamonds, chamber 19 is charged with a mixture of particulate graphite, nickel, and chromium carbide. The apparatus is mounted in an hydraulic press so as to force the pistons into the die enclosure, whereby the pressure in chamber 19 may be raised to about 50,000 atm. Electric current is then passed from piston 11, through chamber 19 to piston 11', or vice versa, in order to heat the reaction mixture to 1200- 1600‹C.
