Abstract

1,219,038. Hydrogenation of oxo products. M. I. SILICH, and L. I. KLINOVA. 5 June, 1969, No. 28410/69. Heading C2C. Alcohols are produced from a mixture of oxo reaction products by a two-stage catalytic hydrogenation, wherein the first stage is conducted over a silica gel-supported Cu catalyst at a temperature of at least 125‹ C. and 50-300 atmospheres, and the second stage is conducted over a Ni-Cr catalyst at a temperature not above 180‹ C. and at 50-300 atmospheres. The catalyst in the first stage preferably contains 10% by weight of Cu and the oxo reaction products are advantageously fed at a space velocity of 1-7 hr.-1. In an example an oxo reaction product containing 39% of C 3-5 aldehydes is hydrogenated to give a quantitative yield of the corresponding alcohols.
