Abstract
1,218,237. Electrolytically making tin plate. JONES & LAUGHLIN STEEL CORP. Dec.5, 1968 [Dec. 8, 1967], No.57906/68. Heading C7B. A process of making tin plate comprises (a) electrolytically cleaning a steel base by making it the cathode in a pickling acid electrolyte comprising H 2 SO 4 or HCl to which tin is added so that a tin preplate is deposited simultaneously with the cleaning, (b) transferring the preplated steel base without fusion brightening into an acid electrotinning bath, (c) electro-plating it therein with tin, (d) heating the doubly plated base to fuse the tin coating, and (e) thereafter quenching it. In cleaning step (a), tin may be added to the electrolyte in the form of a stannous compound and also from insoluble anodes covered over 2% of their surface with tin. The anode in the pickling acid may be carbon or a Si-Fe alloy and the tin coated steel base be heated to between 580 and 600‹F. or the anode may be Pb and the coated base be heated to between 500 and 550‹F. The acid electro-tinning bath of steps (b) and (c) may comprise stannous chloride and alkali fluoride.
