Abstract

1,217,884. Container closures. PHILLIPS PETROLEUM CO. 25 Jan., 1968 [26 Jan., 1967], No. 3959/68. Heading B8T. A container closure of resilient material comprises a disc portion 11 and a wall 12 which act as a plug stopper, and an outer skirt 14. When the closure is assembled on a bottle, seals are formed at 22 and 24 and annular indentations 19 allows some flexing of the wall to ensure proper seating of the disc 11. The disc is thicker than wall 12 to give sufficient strength and rigidity for a tight seal. If the container has an inwardly disposed lip on the internal bore the closure forms one of the seals by the lip co-operating with indentation 19. When closures are stacked on each other, head 16 seats on shoulder 17 and a cylindrical portion 18 is a sliding fit in a cylindrical portion 21 thus stopping them sticking together. In a modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), the disc 11 has grooves (30) around the periphery to allow venting of internal pressure from a container interior, the seal formed by the outer skirt acting as a one way valve.
