A traversible apparatus for cleaning a felt in a paper-making machine includes a number of elements each rotatably mounted and each having a felt-contacting surface comprising interconnected crests and troughs the crest of greatest diameter being at or near the middle of the element and the diameters of the other crests decreasing progressively towards the ends of the element, and a number of devices to apply a contaminant-removing fluid to the felt as it passes over the elements. As shown, there are five elements 36, 37 &c., e.g. of nylon, each comprising a cylinder with a helical rib 38, 39 &c., alternately of opposite sense, each helical rib having its greatest diameter at the middle of its element, and decreasing towards each end. prayers 33, 34 &c., apply a cleaning liquid, e.g. a detergent or water, to the felt where it is stretched by the helical ribs. The "saturator" 35 is bowed upwards to correspond with the ribs 38 and 39, and has slots 41 through which cleaning fluid is supplied to the felt. All these and bars 15 are mounted on the open side of an otherwise closed box, which is connected to a source of vacuum. The box may be divided in two parts at 16, 17, which may be mounted on either side of another part of the papermachine, e.g. a roller (Fig. 5, not shown).
