Abstract
1,215,889. Sintered hard-facing alloys. H. J. WOOCK. Aug. 14, 1968, No. 38955/68. Heading C7A and C7D. A matrix composition for use in bonding carbides to metallic (e.g. Fe and steel) surfaces is formed from the following materials in the stated weight proportions:- Co 1-8% Fe/65-68% Cr 15-30% Fe/74-76% Mn 1-8% Fe/50-75% Mo 0-5% Fe/16-20% B 0-3% Fe/83-88% Si 6-15% Cu 0-3% Ni 40-60% The composition is made by melting the constituents, and then crushing and pulverising the resulting alloy. For hard-facing, the composition is mixed with up to 80% tungsten-, boron-, molybdenum-, or titanium-carbide, and 3-8% of a granular flux composed of boric acid 68-85% borax 10-27% sodium silicate 2-10%. The matrix-carbide-flux is then mixed with liquid sodium silicate and applied to the surface to be coated. The coated object is dried at 100‹-300‹F. and then heated to 2025 Œ 75 ‹F. in a furnace atmosphere containing 9-11% CO 2 .
