Abstract
1,215,792. Refuse - consuming furnaces. VOLKSWAGENWERK A.G. 29 Jan., 1969 [30 Jan., 1968; 16 Feb., 1968], No. 5047/69. Heading F4B. Refuse is fed down an annular shaft 3 of an incinerator into a primary combustion chamber 6 in which it is partially burnt and then passed through a central opening 7 into a secondary combustion chamber 20 where burning is completed with the aid of several oil burners 26a. The ash falls through an opening 25 and is collected in an ash remover having a water bath 30. Ash in the form of granules is removed from the bath by an endless conveyer 31. The combustion gases flow through a duct 20a into a waste heat boiler (15, Fig. 4a) and an air preheater (14). An exhaust fan (21) is arranged after the air preheater to ensure that the incinerator operates at a negative pressure. The primary combustion chamber includes a stationary cylindrical refractory wall 17 and a frustoconically-shaped rotatable fire pot 5. A series of stationary water-cooled deflectors 10 are provided for guiding the refuse. The outer wall 4 of the shaft 3 is arranged to rotate to evenly distribute the refuse throughout the shaft. Water seals 9, 22, 23a are provided between the rotating and stationary parts of the incinerator. A burner 26 is located in the primary combustion chamber roof 12 which together with the secondary combustion chamber walls is constructed from side-by-side cooling tubes. Preheated combustion air enters through nozzles 16. Hot air from the preheater (14) may be introduced through nozzles 19 for predrying refuse of high moisture content. The opening 7 has a water-cooled shell 8.
