Abstract

1,215,234. Surface treatment of films. EASTMAN KODAK CO. 22 March, 1968 [24 March, 1967], No. 14105/68. Heading B5B. [Also in Divisions B6 and D2] The surface of material 10 is treated by a stream of gas, which has been raised to an electronically excited state and freed from charged particles, to improve its adhesion to aqueous based coatings. Gas, e.g. A, He, H 2 , Kr, Ne, N 2 , or Xe, from a pressurized reservoir 1 with a valve 2 is activated in an exciter stage 3 by a discharge between electrodes 4 and 5 connected across an r.f. generator 13 and charged particles are removed by an ion trap 6 comprising oppositely charged plates 7 and 8 before the excited gas issues from a nozzle 9. Specified materials include polyesters, especially polyethylene terephthalate and polycarbonates, and cellulose acetate.
