Abstract

1,214,683. Compression moulding. CINCINNATI SHAPER CO. 29 Feb., 1968 [28 April, 1967], No. 9851/68. Heading B5A. In a compacting press for producing articles from powdered metal or other material a fixed stop for a press platen 10 during a pressing operation is provided by hydraulic fluid in a chamber 18 supplied by a high-pressure pump P, the platen being lowerable subsequently by opening a valve 27 to allow the fluid to flow from the chamber 18 into a chamber 30. This fluid moves a floating annular piston 31 upwardly in a cylinder 12 against a low-pressure fluid supplied through a port 71. During a compacting stroke the platen 10 floats downwardly until it abuts the top plate 13 of the cylinder 12 which is connected to a piston 14 in a cylinder 15. When the compacted article is to be ejected, an ejection rod 60 carried by the next higher platen or the top platen, and a rod member 22 are moved downwardly against the action of a spring 23 so as to open the valve 27. Before valve 27 is opened, a subsidiary valve element 25 carried by the member 22 is opened. After ejection, the parts are restored to their original positions by the low-pressure fluid above the piston 31. The level at which the platen 10 is stopped can be adjusted by lowering the cylinder 15 by means of a screw 50 and nut 51. Overload protection for the platen 10 is provided by a relief valve 41.
