A vertical boiler with a cylindrical shell 2 forming an outer water chamber 14 is provided with two vertical columns 10, 12, with water chambers therein, which have flat sides facing the combustion space and curved sides facing the shell 2 and form curved flues A. A horizontal member 13 similar in cross-section to members 10, 12, forms a roof for the combustion space and is connected by pipe 22 to the upper water space 3 of the boiler. The gases follow the path of the arrows 27, Fig. 2, being guided by baffles 25, 26, between the ends of the columns 10, 12, and the shell 2. The baffles 25 are slidable to facilitate cleaning.
