Abstract

1,213,945. Continuous casting. CONCAST Inc. 19 May, 1969 [20 May, 1968], No. 25519/69. Heading B3F. A continuous casting mould, particularly for casting steel billets having recessed crosssections, has wall sections which are retractable at the end of a casting operation to enable the solidified ingot formed in the mould to be withdrawn without damaging the internal moulding surfaces. An I-shaped cavity 11 is defined by two mould halves 12<SP>1</SP>, 12<SP>11</SP> mounted by means of fluid operated rams is, 19, 18<SP>1</SP>, 19<SP>1</SP> on a frame 22. The mould half 12<SP>1</SP> is located with respect to a following casting guideway (not shown) by shoulders 26 abutting projections 25 on the frame 22. The other mould half 1211 abuts half 121 at contact surfaces 23, 24. In operation, a greater pressure is applied to the mould half 12<SP>1</SP> than to the mould half 12<SP>11</SP>. The above mould is utilized in a machine in which melt is teemed into a vertical mould from a ladle and is withdrawn vertically through guide rolls on to a curved apron where the casting is spray-cooled and bent so as to travel in a horizontal direction.
