Abstract
1,213,183. Cryogenic prokes. G. RIGGI. 31 Jan., 1968 [4 Feb., 1967; 6 June, 1967], No. 4985/68. Heading A5R. A cryogenic surgical implement comprises a cylinder 1 containing fluid under pressure, a probe 9 including a capillary tube 2 connected to the cylinder 1 through a pipe 3 which is flexible over a part of its length, a thermal condenser 5, 6, 7 for liquefying fluid flowing from the cylinder into the pipe and maintaining it at a temperature below the evaporating temperature of the fluid at the pressure prevailing in the pipe and a manually operable valve 13 for selectively connecting the capillary tube 2 with atmosphere through a vacuum pump 17 for evaporation of the fluid in the probe. The escaping vapour passes through a sleeve 15 surrounding a part of the pipe 3 to the vacuum pump 17. The degree of vacuum produced by the pump is adjustable by a screw 21 controlling the opening pressure of a valve 19. The greater the vacuum produced the greater the cooling effect of fluid evaporating within the probe. The proke 9 comprises a tube with an operative end which is formed as a bulging cap 10, a hollow cylinder (22), Figure 2 not shown, or a hollow annulus (23) Figure 4 not shown.
