Abstract

1332181 Refrigerating AIR PRODUCTS & CHEMICALS Inc 25 Sept 1970 [11 Dec 1969] 45803/70 Heading F4H [Also in Division A5] A device 18 for directing a jet of cryogenic fluid upon skin tissue comprises a nozzle 36 and means for cooling gas which is at a high pressure to a cryogenic temperature. The gas on entering the device through an attachment 54 is split into two streams, the first of which passes through a helical coil 49 of finned tube wound on a mandrel 42, and into a chamber 52 via a tip 50 which permits Joule-Thompson expansion of the gas and the consequent lowering of its temperature. The first gas stream in the helical coil on the mandrel is then precooled by heat transfer with the countercurrent passage of the expanded gas towards a vent 70 so that the fluid from the Joule-Thompson expansion is further reduced in temperature to a liquid-vapour mixture which is cold enough to liquefy by heat exchange the second stream of gas which passes through a helical coil 57 and then through a tube 58 from which it impinges the surface of the skin. The device is thermally insulated with material 72 such as extended polyurethane foam. The flow of gas from a high pressure cylinder (10) Fig. 1 (not shown) is regulated by means of a pressure reducing valve (20), downstream of which is a bed (22) of adsorbent material which removes impurities which may solidify and obstruct the heat exchange tubes. A further valve 24 which is electrically controlled is positioned to block the flow of gas to the probe, a light (30) across the electrical leads to the valve, indicating the open position of the valve.
