Abstract

1,212,415. Packaging-machine. OWENSCORNING FIBERGLAS CORP. 5 April, 1968, No. 16622/68. Heading B8C. Fibrous, sponge or like material, compressed between two surfaces, is pushed from between the surfaces into a receptacle inside which is provided air film bearing surfaces to reduce the friction of insertion. In one embodiment, a stack of fibrous bats placed in a container 10, Fig. 2, is compressed by a ram 20 to a position shown in chain lines. The ram and container base 30 have perforations, slots &c. 24, 34 respectively through which air is blown to form an air cushion which reduces the frictional forces between the stack and the base and ram. A ram 41 pushes the stack laterally out of the container into a receptacle, e.g. a sleeve, held by a clamp 45 over the end of a shoot 50 also having air holes 55, 56. Side walls (58, 59) may be added to the shoot, Fig. 3, not shown, and a low friction plastics sheet (46) adhered to the top of the shoot may assist guiding the stack into the receptacle. In a further embodiment, Fig. 4, a perforated platen 72, separated from the ram 20, and a ram 71 having an extended perforated base portion are provided. As the stack 15 is compressed the ram and platen 72 interlock to form a U-shaped carrier, air being supplied along the shaft 73. The perforations may extend through the carrier to form air cushions between the ram and the base and the receptacle walls as the carrier moves into the receptacle. The package is held at the sides by grippers (81, 82), Fig. 5, not shown, as the carrier is withdrawn. In a modification of the arrangement of Fig. 1 a pair of opposed plenums (110, 120), Fig. 7, not shown, having perforations on their facing sides lie in extension of the top and bottom walls of the shoot and outside of the receptacle. Air is blown into the receptacle 105, Fig. 8, an open ended sleeve, by the plenums through perforations 106, 107 in its sides to form the air cushion during insertion of the material.
