Abstract

1,212,191. Production of copper from copper matte. HUMPHREYS & GLASGOW Ltd. Jan.24, 1968 [Jan.25, 1967], No.3807/67. Heading C7D. Molten copper matte is formed into descending streams which are atomized and the matte droplets are exposed to an oxidizing gas to produce copper. The melt may be atomized by one or more jets of gas (e. g. N2, steam or an oxidizing gas) and the oxidation may be accomplished by the atomizing gas or by allowing the droplets to fall through an oxidizing gas in a column. A flux may be added in the atomizing jet(s) or into the pool of collected product where function oxidizing or reducing (e. g. charcoal) substances may also be added. If the S content is insufficient to maintain the temperature of the melt a liquid or gaseous fuel may be injected into the melt stream.
