Abstract

1,210,828. Gear-grinding; abrasive hob. HONDA GIKEN KOGYO K.K. 1 Dec., 1967 [15 Dec., 1966], No. 54800/67. Headings B3B, B3D and B3K. A method of grinding a gear comprises engaging a hob 4 and the gear 13 while the gear is rotating freely and then engaging a drive to the gear, the hob 4 having a tapered or plain entry portion 26 of rubber or plastics to guide the initial meshing. The gear 13 is mounted on mandrel 12 between centres 11, 10, the latter being rotated by a motor 6 through gears 7, 8 and a shaft 9. The mandrel can be clamped to the shaft 9 by supplying fluid pressure to a chamber 18, Fig. 3, to move a sleeve 16 downwardly against springs 23 thus clamping collet fingers 21 against the end 12A of the mandrel. In operation, the gear and hob are each rotated out of contact at the correct operational speeds by synchronous motors 3, 6. The sleeve 16 is then released so that the gear continues to rotate merely by a frictional drive from the centre 10. The hob is moved axially to take up engagement with the gear which adjusts itself to a correct meshing relationship. The sleeve is then moved downwardly to drive the gear positively. In a modification, the hob and gear are rotated by a common motor. The gear may be rotated initially merely by the frictional drive.
