[Also in Division B3] A machine for grinding a surface of variable curvature comprises a drivable workpiecemounting spindle 4, and means for transmitting power to the spindle 4, including a mechanism 6 controlled by a programming mechanism 11 for cyclically varying the spindle speed, so that the curved surface has a substantially constant effective linear speed relative to a grinding member 3. The mechanism 6 comprises a driven helical gear 8, connected to the spindle 4 through a gear drive 9, and a driving helical gear 7 rigid on a shaft 10 driven through a relatively slidable worm gear drive 16. A cam 12, contoured according to the workpiece 1, is rigid with the shaft 10, being urged into continuous engagement with a fixed stop 13 by a spring 15, and as the cam 12 rotates, the gear 7 is moved across the gear 8 to increase or reduce the speed transmitted. Alternatively, the cam 12 and gear 7 may be rigidly connected and splined on an axially fixed drive shaft. The grinding member 3 is pressed against the workpiece 1 by resilient means 20.
