Abstract

1,210,482. Automatic speed control. SULZERBROS. Ltd. Jan. 13, 1969 [Jan. 11, 1968], No. 1836/69. Heading G3R. In a diesel-electric vehicle having a supercharged diesel engine 8 driving a generator 6 which supplies the traction motors 10 and wherein a set speed signal a is compared with an actual speed signal b to control the injection of fuel and, after conversion in a function generator 20, with a speed deviation signal C<SP>1</SP> to control generator excitation, the generator excitation is prevented from falling during acceleration or rising during deceleration of the diesel engine. A set speed signal a is produced by a generator 1 controlled by a driver or automatically (not described). After amplification at 12, it is compared at 3 with the output b of a tachometer generator 11 driven by the engine 8. Comparator 3 delivers a speed deviation signal C which is amplified at 13 and applied through a limiter 15 to control fuel injection pumps; the limiter 15 is controlled by fuel pressure to prevent overcharging. The set speed signal a is also applied to function generator 20 which delivers a signal e representing the set value for power output of the engine. This is compared at 4 with the amplified speed deviation signal C<SP>1</SP> and the output h of the comparator 4 is integrated at 22 and applied to control the energization of the field 5 of the generator 6. During acceleration or deceleration the output h of the comparator 4 is cancelled so that there is no change in the output of integrator 22 and the excitation of the generator is not changed. The signal h is fed to an inverting amplifier 27 having separate outputs for positive (deceleration) or negative (acceleration) signals. During deceleration the speed deviation signal C<SP>1</SP> closes a transistor switch 31 Fig. 2 (not shown) connecting the positive output to an adding circuit 26 to cancel the signal h; during acceleration a transistor switch 30 is closed by a simulated speed deviation signal q to connect the negative output to 26. By giving the amplifier 27 a gain greater than unity over-compensation may be provided causing the generator excitation to rise slightly during acceleration and fall during deceleration. The simulated speed deviation signal q is also used to shut off various auxiliaries 35 during the acceleration, such as cooling fans, carriage heaters, &c, to conserve energy.
