Abstract

1,059,065. Power regulation of diesel electric locomotives; control of D.C. motors. ATELIERS DE CONSTRUCTIONS ELECTRIQUES DE CHARLEROI (ACEC). Sept. 8, 1965 [Sept. 9, 1964]. No. 38401/65. Headings H2H and H2J. In a diesel electric locomotive, the power supplied from a D.C. generator 2 to traction motors 3 is automatically adapted to the maximum power available at the diesel engine 1 irrespective of the speed of the latter. Excitation for the generator 2 is supplied from an alternator 13 (driven by the engine 1) through a magnetic power amplifier 12 controlled by a transistorized regulator 11 having an input from a function generator 10, which input represents the ideal mechanical power of the engine 1. The generator 10 is supplied by three voltage signals respectively representative of the position of the engine fuel injection pumps, the scavenging pressure of the engine and the speed of a tacho-generator 9 driven by the engine. A speed governor 4 is controlled from the driver's cab and acts on a fuel injection device 5 which determines the angular position of the rotor of a synchro device 7 supplying the generator 10, the "scavenging" voltage being obtained through a pressure transducer 8. The regulator 11 is also fed from transducers 14. 15 with signals respectively representative of generator current and field excitation, so that the current is progressively limited according to a linear law for each engine speed as a function of the generator voltage, and so that the generator voltage is maintained substantially constant for each engine speed. The regulator 11 is also supplied from a mixing circuit 18 fed with a voltage from a potentiometer 16 adjustable in the driver's cab and with a voltage from each of a number of tacho-generators 17 driven by the axles of the locomotive, an increase in the speed of any one of the axles relative to that determined by the setting of the potentiometer 16 producing a control voltage in the regulator 11 which reduces the excitation and hence the power output of the generator 2. Typical voltage/current characteristics are given for a range of engine speeds, Fig. 2 (not shown). Further signals may be fed to the regulator 11 to produce braking and other automatic control.
