Abstract

1,209,216. Blind riveting. G.K.N. SCREWS & FASTENERS Ltd. 31 July, 1969 [10 Aug., 1968], No. 38321/68. Addition to 1,128,442. Heading B3U. A blind riveting tool adapted to drill a hole in at least one of the sheets to be joined comprises a sleeve 67 coaxially connected to a motor-driven drive shaft 65 for rotation therewith and axial sliding relative thereto by a fluid pressure piston and cylinder 91, 92 via means 88 and a mandrel gripping device 76 connected to the sleeve 67 so as to be rotated thereby and moved axially therewith. One end of the sleeve 67 is connected to the drive shaft 65 by a keyway connection 69, 70, 71 and the other end is connected to a shaft 72 carrying at its forward end collet fingers 76 positioned in a rotatably and slidably mounted sleeve 77. The mandrel 85 having a drill point at its one end (Fig. 4A, not shown), is engaged in a bore in the shaft 72 and is gripped by collet fingers 76 spring-loaded by a spring 79. When a control valve 101 is operated, air is admitted from a chamber 100 to operate an air motor 64, which rotates the drive shaft 65. Simultaneously, the sleeve 67, shaft 72 and mandrel 85 are rotated, the latter drilling a hole in a sheet. After drilling, a further valve (116), (Fig. 2, not shown) is operated to cause fluid under pressure to move the piston 92 against the action of a spring 98. An arm 88 is thereby pivoted causing the sleeve 67 to be moved to the left over the shaft 65 and the mandrel 85 to set the rivet.
