Abstract
1,208,498. Fuel cell electrodes. PIONEER RESEARCH Inc. 15 Oct., 1968 [4 Dec., 1967], No. 48771/68. Heading H1B. [Also in Division C3] A catalytic electrode comprising an electrically semi-conductive mixture of a catalytic silver substance dispersed through a fluorocarbon resin selected from homopolymers and copolymers of perhalogenated fluorine-containing olefines may be prepared by mixing particles of silver carbonate and resin, the amount of resin being at least sufficient to surround the particles, forming the mixture into a desired electrode shape, and then baking the shape at a temperature sufficient to convert the silver carbonate to catalytic silver substance, and to cause the resin to flow about the substance and form a coherent structure. The catalytic silver substance is that form of silver, be it the silver metal or a simple oxide form thereof, that behaves catalytically towards oxygen. It may catalyse a great number of chemical reactions, particularly the oxidation of an appropriate fuel in a fuel cell. The preferred resin is polytetrafluoroethylene. A polyhydric alcohol may be added before baking to give crater-like recesses in the structure. The mixture may be a coating on a substrate of glass cloth impregnated with P.T.F.E. or a substrate comprising sintered particles of P.T.F.E:- The substance may have a reinforcing metal screen embedded into it. The electrode may be used as a cathode in a fuel cell using an electrolyte of pH of at least 7, e.g. an alkali metal hydroxide.
