Abstract
1284054 Electrodes for fuel and metal air cells ESB Inc 6 April 1971 8861/71 Heading H1B A method for preparing an air-breaking electrode suitable for a metal-air cell or fuel cell comprises hot-pressing a fluorocarbon polymer sheet containing a pore-forming agent on to a catalyst composition and a metal grid member and then leaching out the pore-forming agent, The fluorocarbon polymer steel may be prepared by blending a mixture of P.T.F.E., P.T.C.F.E., polytrifluoroethylene, polyvinyl fluoride or copolymers of their monomers with sodium carbonate or calcium formate as pore-forming agent and paraffin wax as binder and lubricant, forming the mixture into a sheet, dissolving out the paraffin wax and sintering the sheet. The grid may be nickel, for alkaline or neutral electrolytes or tantalum or niobium for acid electrolytes. The catalyst composition may comprise silver, gold, platinum, palladium, rhodium, ruthenium, osmium or iridium on a carrier of carbon or finely divided metal. Sometimes the carrier can be dispensed with, or the carbon itself may act as catalyst. The catalyst composition may include a hydrophobic material for wet-proofing, e.g. a fluorocarbon polymer, silicone resin or paraffin wax. The catalyst composition may be applied to the grid then the fluorocarbon sheet applied by hotpressing, or a layer of catalyst may be applied to the sheet, the grid placed on the catalyst layer and the assembly hot-pressed. The poreforming agent is then leached out with water.
