Abstract

1,208,376. Tubular heat exchangers. LINDE A.G. 23 Oct., 1968 [3 Nov., 1967], No. 50304/68. Heading F4S. A tubular heat exchanger for cooling gases, e.g. cracking-process gases, comprises a plurality of parallel spaced horizontal tubes enclosed within a jacket 16. Gas to be cooled is passed through the tubes, liquid cooling medium being passed through the jacket between the tubes entering at inlet connections 17 and leaving via outlet connections 18. The tubes are formed in a plurality of tube members each of which comprises a pair of parallel vertical sheets such as 1, 1<SP>1</SP> each having semicylindrical corrugations therein co-operating to define a row of tubes. Tubes of adjacent tube members are arranged in staggered relationship with respect to each other. The ends of the sheets comprising the tube members are curved outwardly, adjacent curved edges being welded together in fluid tight manner eliminating the need for tube end plates. The outer edges of the sheets are welded on to the lips 14 of jacket flanges 15. The sheets are provided at intervals with inwardly. directed transverse corrugations (25, Fig. 5, not shown) to take up elastically longitudinal expansion of the tubes. The ends of the sheets are stiffened by straps or webs 12 welded transversely to the sheets. The cooling fluid on leaving through the outlets 18 is fed to a separating drum wherein any vapour formed is separated out from the liquid coolant which is recycled to the inlet connections 17. In an alternative embodiment (Figs. 8, 9, not shown) the heat exchanger tubes are arranged vertically within a surrounding jacket, cooling fluid entering the jacket through two diametrically opposed inlets at the bottom of the jacket and leaving through two similarly situated outlets at the top.
