Abstract

1,208,158. Recovery of tetra alkyl lead from vent gases. ETHYL CORP. 18 March, 1968 [30 March, 1967; 24 Oct., 1967], No. 12942/68. Heading C2J. Tetra alkyl lead is recovered from vent gases by (a) contacting the vent gas with a precooled organic scrubbing liquid to produce a scrubbed gas phase and a contacted liquid phase; (b) passing contacted liquid phase to an organic liquid sump; (c) removing from said sump a part of the organic liquid therein, cooling it and recycling it for use in step (a); (d) recovering tetra alkyl lead in organic liquid from the sump. The vent gas may be scrubbed with aq. NaOH soln., having a concentration of 1-25% by wt., prior to step (a) and the liquid phase from the scrubbing being passed to the organic liquid sump. For large volumes of vent gas it is preferred to remove the major portion of R 4 Pb by treatment as above and then to contact the scrubbed gas phase from (a) with further precooled liquid to give a second scrubber gas and contacted liquid phases, the latter being passed to a second organic liquid sump. A part of the organic liquid from the second sump is subjected to step (c) above. Apparatus is described for carrying out the process (see Fig.) in which gas enters via line 10 to fume scrubber 11 where the gas is contacted with aq. NaOH to produce a scrubbed gas phase 14 and an aqueous liquid phase 15. Organic liquid 16 is removed via lines 17, 19 to a cooler 20 where it is cooled by brine to a temperature between -10‹ and 50‹ F. Cooled organic liquid enters tower 30 via line 3 where it is brought in contact with scrubbed gas 14 in a countercurrent manner. After contact the organic liquid returns to vessel 13 and settles in liquid 16. R 4 Pb and toluene recovered can be removed via line 35. By use of a weir 40 the organic liquid is retained in vessel 13 except for that removed to product recovery, and. aqueous liquid phase is permitted to overflow into sump 41 from whence it may be recycled to fume scrubber 11 or removed via line 45 and replaced by fresh NaOH via line 46. To prevent building of deposit in tower 30, NaOH is supplied through lines 6 and/or 7. Pure organic liquid is added via lines 66, 47, 48 in order to maintain a constant amount. For large volumes of gas a second contact stage may take place in tower 51 and sump 52 in a similar manner. The organic liquid is preferably ethylene dichloride or dibromide and is cooled sufficiently in step (c) to produce a scrubbed gas phase with a temperature of 30-60‹ F. Preferably the vent gas is initially at a temperature of 80-130‹ F. and the inert gas used is preferably nitrogen.
