Abstract

1,206,339. Phenolic resin compositions, cashew-nut shell oil resin compositions. BENDIX CORP. 15 Nov., 1968, No. 54341/68. Addition to 1,144,785. Heading C3R. A material suitable for use in brake linings comprises a resin, a frictional material and 1.5- 25 per cent by volume of particles which are greater than 20 mesh (US Standard) in size and consist of graphite, a ceramic powder and a non-ceramic metal or metal oxide bound together by 30-35% of a thermoset phenolic resin. The particulate additive may comprise 15-25% of graphite, 10-25% of ceramic and 30-50% of non-ceramic. The ceramic may be sillimanite, mullite, MgO or ZrO and the non- ceramic may be Fe, Cu or Fe 2 O 3 . These ingredients may be mixed with the binder and the mixture when set, ground to the required particle size and welded to the other ingredients. In examples the phenolic resin binder is a linseed oil modified novolak, cured with hexamethylene tetramine, the ceramic is mullite and the non-ceramic iron or iron oxide. The other components are asbestos, cashew friction dust, slag (blast grit), cashew nut shell liquid resin cured with hexamethylene tetramine, solvent, barytes, rubber scrap, powdered graphite, brass chips and phenolic resin.
