Abstract

1,204,855. Positive clutches. ROOTES MOTORS Ltd. 9 Oct., 1967 [10 Oct., 1966], No. 45135/66. Heading F2C. In the balked, frictionally synchronized positive clutch of Specification 1,159,023, wherein a dog clutch sleeve 19 is axially slidable on a hub 17 into engagement with a dog clutch member 14, and a coned synchronizing ring 21 having limited circumferential movement with respect to the sleeve 19 is frictionally engageable with the clutch member 14, and in which axial movement is initially transmitted from the sleeve 19 to the coned ring 21 by a spring ring 30 received in a channel 29 at the base of an internal annular recess (28) of the sleeve 19 (Fig. 3, not shown) and in notches 31 in plates 25 fast with the ring 21, the sleeve 19 is directly held in its engaged positions (Fig. 5) by the spring ring 30 which enters spaced grooves 50, 51 in the hub 17, thereby reducing wear on the sleeve and selector forks (not shown) through which the holding force in prior arrangements is normally applied. Pre-synchronous balking is (as in Specification 1,159,023) by balls (or rollers) (36), Fig. 2 (not shown), which are held in the plates 25 on the ring 21 and are circumferentially moved by frictional drag on the ring 21 to engage behind dog tooth end faces in the recess (28) of the sleeve 19 to balk axial movement of the latter until synchronization when the balls are radially inwardly cammed by the sleeve 19 to move down ramps (38) of shallow V-recesses in the hub 17 into non-baulking positions opposite tooth spaces of the sleeve 19. On synchronization, the spring ring 30 is expanded and passes over the plates 25. The arrangement shown is a double clutch between a shaft 12 and change-speed gears 10, 11.
