Abstract

1,202,789. Liquefied gas storage containers. BRIDGESTON EKIKA GAS K.K. 5 Dec., 1968 [6 Feb., 1968], No. 57908/68. Heading F4P. The vertical side 6, Fig. 1, or sides of a membrane tank for storing cold liquefied gas e.g. methane supported by load bearing heat insulation material 4 lining the interior of a rigid outer tank is formed initially with vertically extending corrugations 6<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 6A, such that at ambient temperature and under no load its peripheral dimension is greater than the inner periphery of the insulation 4 whereby when under load and low temperature the stress to which the wall is subjected becomes zero or becomes compressive. When the periphery of the membrane tank side relative to insulation 4 is such that the membrane stress becomes zero the corrugated membrane periphery at low temperature and under no load assumes the position shown in Fig. 6B and at low temperature and normal load the membrane is stretched to assume the position shown in Fig. 6C so that substantially the whole of the membrane tank periphery bears against the insulation 4. In the event that the relative periphery dimensions of the membrane wall and the insulation are such that under working conditions the membrane stress is compressive, the membrane side wall assumes the corrugated form shown in Fig. 6D.
